Music Vid analysis Leah Lovan T273
Leah Lovan
This is the music video for "Something Wild" by Lindsey Stirling featuring Andrew McMahon. This is also the featured song in the upcoming remake movie of Pete's Dragon. This music video is a mix of performance and narrative. The narrative tells a small story of a bullied kid finding a friend and they go on an imaginative adventure. They also show the kids when they are older as Lindsey and Andrew and how that one moment in time stays with them forever. However, the story line is not linear and goes back and forth from past and present to show who them are today was affected by the past. The performance part comes from the scenes where Lindsey is dancing and playing violin;also when Andrew is playing the piano and singing.
Overall the style of the video is very bright warm, homey and lighthearted. For the most part the lighting is either natural sunlight or a warm light. During some points the lighting changes to a cool blue color. This happens to show the grand adventure the kids are on when imagining they are on the ocean, how they have been adventuring for a long time and that it is dark now and to hint at the bridge of the song while also showing the adult girl still has imagination. The blue may be different from the normal warm color but it still adds to the sense of adventure. The camera also starts off with lingering medium shots then changes during the chorus' to more dramatic zooms, movements, angles and quick changes. This helps makes the chorus more energetic and energy.
Some of the key moments are when Lindsey reveals she has a drawing of a dragon then they show the little boy had it to begin with. This is shown by close up shots of the item. The same is with the map that Andrew has. Another key moment is when the kids have their first adventure by using imagination and the lighting changes from warm colors to a blue cool color to draw attention to it. This same technique is used during the bridge and final adventure with the kids.
As stated before the camera does not move much at first then is constantly moving and changing when the chorus is first heard. It makes the chorus parts more exciting which adds the the overall adventurous feel. The video follows the song fairly well. It could have been changed a little bit since it is also advertising the movie Pete's Dragon but it is hardly noticeable if at all. Even with the advertising element the video fits the song very well.
